Dutch Light

Ongoing photo study of Dutch still life paintings

I'm continuously working to expand my understanding of the patterns and mechanics behind the amazing light and realism displayed in Dutch still life paintings.

The Amsterdam sun streams through the city in countless novel and geometrical ways, as if the city were laid out like a giant Stonehenge or Mayan city. Over the years I have become familiar with key seasonal changes and combinations. It's an ongoing dialogue.

Many of the images in this collection were also shot on various types of instant film using a Rollei 6008i medium format camera with a Polaroid back.

Golden Range

This series was shot emulating the traditional technique where the primary light source is a window directly left of the subject. By taking incremental exposures it's possible to observe the noteworthy qualities the sun has on the subject and environment.
